Country Water / Safety / Asbestos Remediation

Remediation works are now being undertaken on two sites where discarded material included broken pipes identified as containing bonded asbestos material has been dumped.

Specialists have advised Country Water that the material is non-friable, sound and stable in its current state and poses minimal risk.

The upcoming work at both sites will eliminate any potential harm to the community and the environment. It will also help rehabilitate the land.

The remediation work will include:
  • Clearing vegetation.
  • Sieving/screening contaminated soil.
  • Transporting discarded material to landfill.
  • Spreading and levelling screened fill.
  • Revegetating the site and final clean-up.

Site 1 is vacant land between Morgan Street and Morgan Lane and partially bound by Sulphide Street. Work will begin at this site early December 2008 and continue for approximately 2 weeks.

Site 2 is vacant land and includes the area bordered by King, Talbot, Duff and Jamieson Streets. Work began at this site Wednesday 5 November and is expected to continue for approximately 6 weeks.

Properties close to plant project site may notice increased activity. Country Water and other contractors involved will make every effort to minimise any inconvenience.

Water and other dust control measures have been put in place in order to minimise dust.
